Two Cuba-Headed Relief Vessels Reported Unaccounted For after Setting Sail from Mexican Waters.
A extensive rescue and recovery mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing boats loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Naval Rescue Efforts Initiated
The Mexican government has deployed naval assets and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying no fewer than nine sailors, as stated by a military release.
The ships had been projected to reach Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their docking, the statement clarified.
Background of Aid to Cuba
The island nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country endures repeated nationwide blackouts.
"The captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy stated.
The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Previous Aid Shipment
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had carried 14 tons of donated goods to the country.
That boat, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.
Broader Geopolitical Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.
Global bodies have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of fifty thousand surgical procedures postponed in Cuba amid power shortages.
Foreign policy tensions have increased over the past months, with statements from different leaders highlighting the delicate state of relations.
Reacting to certain proposals, a high-ranking Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that early stages of discussions were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.
The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the sailboats and ensure the safety of the crews.
As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
