Three Lions Coach Reveals The Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
Ten years back, Anthony Barry was playing in League Two. Today, he's dedicated on helping the England manager win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. His journey from the pitch to the sidelines started through volunteering with the youth team. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He had found his purpose.
Rapid Rise
The coach's journey is incredible. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in roles with national teams for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include legends including top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the top according to him.
“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a systematic approach enabling us to have the best chance.”
Obsession with Details
Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour all the time, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their strategies involve player analysis, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the England collective and dislikes phrases such as "break".
“This isn't a vacation or a rest,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
Ambitious Trainers
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the entire field and that’s what we spend most of our time to. It’s our job not just to keep up with developments but to surpass them and set new standards. It’s a constant process with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.
“We get 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We have to play a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from thought to data to understanding to action.
“To create a system for effective use during the limited time, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with them. We have to spend time in calls with players, observing them live, sense their presence. Relying only on those 50 days, we have no chance.”
Upcoming Matches
Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. They've already ensured qualification after six consecutive victories and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.
“The manager and I agree that the style of play should represent the best aspects about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The physicality, the versatility, the physicality, the integrity. The England jersey must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, we need to provide a style that allows them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and increase execution.
“You can gain psychological edges available to trainers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared now. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to increase tempo in that central area.”
Thirst for Improvement
His desire for improvement is relentless. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class contained luminaries including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations he could find to hone his presentations. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.
Barry graduated with top honors, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – became a published work. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed most of his staff except Barry.
The next manager with the club became Tuchel, within months, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he brought Barry over away from London and back alongside him. English football's governing body view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
