In a major move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract for the accomplished player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The agreement grants a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside annual pay of $16 million for the upcoming season and $17M for the final year.

Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for being named the MVP award.
• $500K for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
• $250,000 for ranking in the top ten.
• Another $250,000 for earning the top rookie honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minors without his approval and allows him to become a free agent at the termination of the deal. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Historical Context

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization would also receive a additional payment of 15% triggered salary escalators.

Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to play for the White Sox, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 soon, bolsters a promising lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

Having earned league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, eclipsing the all-time record for a player in Japan formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was limited to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Despite striking out often, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and 977 strikeouts in 892 games. He started playing primarily at first base, he has spent most of his time to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing double that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. The next night in the title match against the United States, he hit a equalizing shot in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's 3-2 3-2 victory.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be officially presented at a press conference on Monday.
