The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed remarkable composure to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of play.

Rai nailed a crucial birdie from around eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory against Fleetwood.

Final Round Excitement

The champion entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

The challenger edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.

Playoff Climax

That led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
