Taliban Utilized Abandoned UK Technology to Locate Local Nationals That Served With Allied Troops, Investigation Hears
A confidential source has told an official investigation that the UK abandoned classified equipment allowing the militant group to locate local individuals that had served with western forces.
Information Leak Puts Thousands at Risk
The source, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were instructed to change residences and alter their contact details to avoid detection from militant forces.
Members of Parliament are looking into the Conservative government's handling of a massive breach of private information concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had requested to come to Britain to avoid militant rule.
How the Leak Was Discovered
A data file including confidential details, comprising identities, contact details and sometimes household data, was accidentally leaked by a worker stationed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.
The breach was discovered in late 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had requested to settle in Britain surfaced on online platforms.
Regime's Resources
“There seems to be a false assumption that militant forces are without the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” she told lawmakers.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire a contact number, they can trace your exact position. That's precisely what intelligence groups achieved.”
When questioned about regarding if authorities had access to sophisticated technology, the whistleblower declared: “They've got everything.”
Consequences of the Data Breach
Initial findings presented to the committee estimated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the incident had been murdered.
A superinjunction about the leak was implemented in last year and blocked relevant facts concerning it from media reporting until recently.
Security Recommendations
Due to legal constraints, Person A and the volunteer organization associated with told Afghan families they were assisting that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been breached”.
“We advised that they change residence if they could and altered their mobile numbers. These represented the two main details that, if the Taliban had access to these details, would lead to them being traced,” the source testified.
Challenged Assessments
The source contested that government assessment conducted by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to determine that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “minimally impact current risk levels”.
“The crucial point is that these Afghans are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to former occupations.”
She detailed terrible violence suffered by concerned people, including electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.
“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to pressure households to reveal locations,” she testified.
