Michael Jordan Tells Court He Felt No Fear of the Racing Body in Legal Battle
Michael Jeffrey Jordan, as he cordially introduced himself in a Charlotte court on Friday, admitted that his competitive side and novelty within the sport motivated his effort with 23XI Racing to “challenge” Nascar over perceived violations of competition laws.
Financial Stakes and a Will to Win
Jordan shared operational insights of his racing venture, revealing he invested $40m of his own funds into the Nascar Cup series team launched with business partner Curtis Polk and longtime driver Denny Hamlin.
“Someone had to step forward,” Jordan stated during testimony. “As a newcomer, I wasn’t afraid. I felt I could challenge Nascar in its entirety. I felt as far as the sport it needed to be looked at through a new lens.”
The Core Dispute: Franchise System and Renewal Demands
At issue is the end of a 2016 deal where Nascar granted each team a franchise. The concept is similar to other professional sports with independent franchises, like the Charlotte Hornets or the Carolina Panthers. The agreement was set to expire in 2024 when Nascar insisted on charter membership renewals.
Jordan was on the witness stand for about sixty minutes and exited the courthouse to pandemonium, with onlookers and reporters clamoring for a view or a picture of the global icon.
Spearheading the Fight
23XI Racing is leading the full-court press along with Front Row Motorsports for Nascar to overhaul a operating model Jordan said is breaking the law to keep two hands on the wheel.

“Hamlin persuaded me getting a third driver boosted our odds of winning,” he testified, sharing that he purchased another franchise last year for $28 million despite the uncertainty. “So I dove in.”

Heather Gibbs detailed her request for permanent charters, which she said a formal letter to Nascar. She testified the pressure of the signature deadline didn’t sit well.
She said, Joe Gibbs first attempted to call and persuade Nascar against forcing signatures, but Nascar’s leader refused the appeal.
“Don’t do this to us,” Gibbs recounted was the message to Nascar’s leadership. She said France replied, “If I wake up and I have 20 charters, that’s what I have. If there are 30, that’s the number.”
