Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. She has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
