Larian Studios Details Its Implementation of Machine Learning for Upcoming Divinity

The developer behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently unveiled its new project, generating immense excitement within the gaming community. However, recent remarks from the studio's figurehead have added clarity to the narrative, focusing on the studio's stance toward machine learning.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a new statement, Larian's director detailed that the company is using generative AI for specific preliminary purposes. These involve fleshing out PowerPoint slides, generating rough artistic references, and creating placeholder dialogue.

Notably, Vincke stressed that the final material in the game will be authored solely by real artists. "Our team is developing all the content manually," he affirmed.

Our studio is constantly expanding our roster of concept artists and are actively forming dedicated writer rooms.

Since visual development is being particularly referenced — we presently have 23 artistic staff and have positions available for more talent.

All our efforts we do is additive and aimed at letting our team spend more time on the creative process.

Every ML tool implemented properly is additive to a creative team process, not a replacement for their skill.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The revelation of employing this technology initially generated unease among some the player base. In reply, Vincke issued further clarification on social media.

"At Larian, we employ machine learning to gather inspiration, in the same way we use Google and reference books," he explained. "During the initial brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for structure which we then substitute with original concept art."

He continued, "Larian brings on talent for their creative vision, not for their willingness to execute what a algorithm proposes."

Three Pillars of Practical Application

Vincke had previously outlined the company's focused approach to AI and ML, defining its use into primary areas:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: Areas like motion capture cleaning, dialogue cleanup, and technical processes like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Rapid Prototyping ('White Boxing'): Using systems to quickly build simple mock-ups of gameplay ideas to experiment with concepts before expensive implementation.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Exploring how AI could one day enhance innovative gameplay, especially in managing unforeseen permutations in a detailed game universe.

He explicitly stated that key artistic areas — like visual art — are not departments where the studio is reducing human input. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these very fields.

"Our studio is not launching a game with machine-made assets, nor considering cutting teams to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
