When I am a DM, I historically steered clear of heavy use of randomization during my tabletop roleplaying games. I preferred was for story direction and session development to be shaped by character actions as opposed to pure luck. That said, I opted to alter my method, and I'm truly happy with the result.

The Spark: Seeing a Custom Mechanic

A well-known actual-play show utilizes a DM who often requests "fate rolls" from the adventurers. This involves selecting a polyhedral and outlining consequences contingent on the roll. While it's essentially no different from using a random table, these get invented on the spot when a player's action doesn't have a predetermined conclusion.

I chose to experiment with this approach at my own session, mainly because it seemed novel and provided a departure from my standard routine. The results were remarkable, prompting me to reconsider the ongoing balance between preparation and spontaneity in a tabletop session.

A Memorable In-Game Example

During one session, my party had just emerged from a large-scale battle. Later, a cleric character wondered if two friendly NPCs—a pair—had made it. Rather than choosing an outcome, I handed it over to chance. I told the player to make a twenty-sided die roll. The stakes were: a low roll, both would perish; on a 5-9, only one succumbed; on a 10+, they both lived.

The die came up a 4. This led to a deeply emotional moment where the characters found the remains of their companions, still clasped together in death. The group conducted a ceremony, which was uniquely meaningful due to previous character interactions. In a concluding reward, I chose that the forms were strangely restored, revealing a magical Prayer Bead. By chance, the item's magical effect was perfectly what the party needed to solve another pressing story problem. It's impossible to script such perfect coincidences.

Honing Your Improvisation

This experience led me to ponder if chance and thinking on your feet are in fact the essence of this game. Although you are a detail-oriented DM, your improvisation muscles can rust. Adventurers frequently take delight in upending the best constructed plots. Therefore, a skilled DM needs to be able to adapt swiftly and fabricate content in real-time.

Using similar mechanics is a great way to practice these talents without venturing too far outside your comfort zone. The strategy is to use them for small-scale circumstances that don't fundamentally change the campaign's main plot. As an example, I would not employ it to determine if the main villain is a traitor. Instead, I might use it to figure out if the PCs arrive right after a major incident occurs.

Enhancing Shared Narrative

This technique also helps keep players engaged and create the sensation that the game world is responsive, progressing based on their choices as they play. It combats the perception that they are merely pawns in a DM's sole narrative, thereby enhancing the shared aspect of storytelling.

This approach has always been integral to the game's DNA. Original D&D were enamored with random tables, which suited a game focused on exploration. Although contemporary D&D tends to prioritizes plot-driven play, leading many DMs to feel they require detailed plans, that may not be the best approach.

Striking the Right Balance

Absolutely no problem with being prepared. However, it's also fine no problem with relinquishing control and permitting the dice to guide minor details in place of you. Authority is a significant factor in a DM's role. We use it to manage the world, yet we frequently find it hard to release it, even when doing so could be beneficial.

My final recommendation is this: Do not fear of temporarily losing your plan. Try a little randomness for smaller outcomes. You might just create that the surprising result is far more powerful than anything you could have planned in advance.
