Three police officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The blast took place as police and firefighters went into the residence near the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the site and one more individual who ran away after the blast was located soon after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.

The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene displayed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the property was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member set off the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The prosecutor believed the explosion had taken place on a floor above the access point and stated to reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he said officers had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed local news, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
