‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic Bilbao
Whenhe first time the Athletic striker played in English soil, an young appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he scored. The second time he appeared in the country, against the Black Cats following that, he scored. The third time, against the Citizens not long later, sure enough, he did it once more. As he revisited to the northwest to face United at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, also. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Thus the club did what was necessary: they substituted him.
“I was furious,” the forward reveals, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. No confirmation on interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Man United, the typical thing. I’m not certain how true it was, but supposing an offer came, I would have wanted to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”
La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph
At the training ground, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the short journey to the airport and another flight to the UK, now to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a tough year for the team, partly because of the pressures of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have secured just a single victory of their last eight matches and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the the period since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a final at home by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway surrounded by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are unique and debuting in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he states.
The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and his assessment was correct. Born to the one-time rival player his father and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the Donostiarra team that nurtured the coach, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he went through a ACL injury, dropped, a drop in category and a return before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the first team but with every stage you progress through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in a handful of matches between his debut and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and my knee gave way.
“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as something positive because it made me change the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it helps. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I did the sessions and then go home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. All the minor details: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; you have to be too.”
Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed emotionally in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he scored three times in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day they need someone in your position, a return could happen. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. Especially after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
