Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
